Guate Spanish Language School Teaching Curriculum Rationale Through the learning of Spanish and various Guatemalan indigenous languages we build on and affirm cultural, linguistic, intellectual and personal identities. Knowledge of several languages empowers individuals by opening economic and social opportunities. It promotes tolerance and diversity as well as solidarity within our global community. Language learning allows us to bridge cultural barriers and promote ways of interpreting our diverse world while stimulating intellectual curiosity. Research supports the positive effects of second language acquisition. Learning a language expands capabilities in other content areas such as math, music and science. Knowledge of another language increases cognitive, communicative and social skills as well as equipping students for the future. Methodology The goal of Guate Spanish Language School's language immersion program is to have students become proficient in the language studied at a level where they can communicate effectively in a variety of situations. The classroom and outside of the classroom environment are settings for students to express themselves in the four skills of speaking, reading, writing, and listening. The instructor facilitates the process by providing guided activities that allow the integration of language, culture and content. Students explore language in authentic context and the use of technology. The four skills are developed via multi-sensory activities to meet individual student needs in a comfortable and dynamic learning environment. Traditional and non-traditional assessments are woven into the curriculum. Language skills are developed systematically throughout our curriculum. Our curriculum is aligned with the US national foreign language learning standards, which promote Connections (interdisciplinary understanding beyond language study), Communication (speaking, reading, writing and listening in another language), Culture (appreciation of other cultures), Comparisons (comparing one’s home language to the language being studied) and Communities (personal contact with speakers of the language). Deep understanding and transformative learning happen when instructors work closely with students to inquire, engage, and create. Our curriculum is a guide rather than a fixed blueprint, allowing instructors to adapt instruction to the particular needs of their student. We are committed to responsive teaching and learning. Culture The study of culture encompasses the exploration of the similarities and differences of world citizens. The diversity of Guatemalan population enables us to have a window on the world’s communities. As our understanding of one another evolves, we become introspective and are better able to explore our own identity as well as that of others. By sharing the products, practices and perspectives of world cultures our students acquire the tools to become global thinkers and thrive in the world.
