Information for Obtaining University Credit
Defining Your University Credit
Normally one semester unit equals 15 contact hours if your university uses a semester system. If your university uses a trimester/quarter system, 1 trimester unit equals 10 contact hours.
Policies on Receiving University Credit
1. Our Immersion Spanish program will provide you with 25 classroom contact hours per week. You may choose a letter grade or Pass/Fail option upon the approval of your home institution.
2. You must obtain the written approval of the advisor or the chairperson of the Foreign Language Department prior to your enrollment. Provide your advisor with total number of units of planned enrollment and indicate which course at your home institution you wish unit to be transferred. Email us your university's requirements and we will pre-approve your studies.
3. A typical university Spanish class provide 60-80 contact hours per term. For this reason, you must enroll for a minimum of three weeks (75 contact hours) in our Immersion Spanish program for obtaining credits.
4. If required, we will send a transcript to your home institution. In order to comply with university and college regulations of the USA and Canada, a transcript for each student will be sent directly to your institution.
5. If your university requests any information regarding courses such as syllabus, attendance, etc. we will send the necessary information.
6. Some universities only give credit if you participate in a joint program between your school and Guate Spanish Language School. In this case, you may only attend classes for credit when accompanied by a resident director from your school. The procedure for requesting authorization of university credit and the courses accepted vary for each institution. It is for this reason that you must obtain the approval in advance.
7. Our instructors will keep a daily record of your performance and the material covered in class. At the end of each week, an evaluation of your progress is recorded. On the last day of each week, a written exam is given.
8. It is your responsibility to keep all notes, syllabi, exams, papers, etc. so that if need be, you can show your university administrators the work completed while abroad. Even if credits were approved prior to departure, it is still important to hold on to these documents in case the amount of credit is ever in question.
9. If you will be needing university credits, email us your request with the written approval of the advisor or the chairperson of the Foreign Language Department and your university's requirements THREE WEEKS prior to your enrollment.
